In the broadest sense of the term, altitude training is the attempt to achieve a training effect through natural or simulated sea level elevation. Since acclimatization to hypoxia is the most important factor in this form of exercise because of high altitude decreasing air pressure, it is also commonly referred to as hypoxia training. A special form of altitude training is the height adjustment training, which has a performance increase at high altitude target. While the effectiveness of height-adjustment training, especially for endurance sports, is well documented, the importance of altitude training as preparation for low-level performance is certainly controversial.
The previous effects of longer altitude stays relate to the stay in natural height with its many effects. In order to achieve the essential desired effects of altitude training in an easily controllable frame, many attempts today to replace the natural height by artificially produced hypoxia. One possibility for this is training or stay in vacuum cabins. The advantages lie in the infinitely fast simulation of different heights and independence from the effects of the weather. Disadvantages are, for example, the often small amount of space available (especially in the case of prolonged stays also associated with psychological stress). The same applies to altitude chambers, which use a change in the air composition (reduction of the oxygen content) at constant air pressure. Alternatively, breathing masks are offered in which the exhaled air is inhaled again and thereby the oxygen content decreases. One disadvantage here is the increasing proportion of carbon dioxide in the respiratory air, which must be laboriously reduced again by reabsorption. In addition, the athlete is limited by wearing the mask in his freedom of movement and increased breathing resistance.
